Vice President of Business Development

Scott L. Hammel brings over 30 years of experience in transactional law, finance, and business development to his role as Vice President of Business Development with Smith NMTC Associates, LLC (Smith NMTC). He is energized to contribute toward Smith NMTC’s work to increase affordable homeownership opportunities through New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC).

Scott began his career with Arthur Young (now Ernst & Young) in 1987 before joining Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal (now Dentons) in 1991. In 1997, he joined Husch Blackwell LLP, and since 2004, Scott has been involved in well over 400 NMTC closings.  Scott has represented Smith NMTC as outside legal counsel on all of its NMTC transactions. He was part of the original team that developed the NMTC-homeownership model and has worked on the Smith NMTC closings since 2007.

Scott has extensive experience with combining state and federal tax credits and other incentives for real estate and business development. His experience includes structuring, negotiating, and closing tax credit investment and financing, real and personal property acquisitions and dispositions, secured and unsecured financings, real and personal property leasing, equity ownership, and other related matters.

Scott graduated with highest honors from the University of Notre Dame having earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with an accounting focus in 1987; successfully completed the CPA exam in 1987; and, earned his Juris Doctor cum laude from Northwestern University in 1991 and was admitted to the Northwestern University Chapter of The Order of the Coif national honor society.
